I heard on the news that today is annual boss day. I guess being an underemployed, free lance writer means I miss some corporate America events. Gone are the days of closing dinners with spouses or significant others (a dubious catagory which was one time acceptable), firm outings, and pensions.
So when did Boss Day crop into our calendars, while at the same time employee benefits have been phased out?
I thought back to different eras. There's no possible way that the psychodelic 60's initiated a labor of love. I doubt it sprouted during the Vietnam War era; certainly not during the Nixon years ("I'm not a crook" - yeah, the cards were floating in), nor in the aftermath whereby Carter and Ford were at the head of the helm when unemployment and inflation sky rocketed. It might have been Reagan, but then again unionize workers were not exactly his biggest fans (ironic turn of events, but I guess people change, even their political spots, when it's in one's best interest). Bush 1 didn't seem possible nor would Bush 2 seem plausible given that his then VP, Dick Chaney, does not bring on warm and fuzzy feelings (especially when I think of him bearing a riffle). Going down the line, I have to pause and ponder when it comes to Bill Clinton. Eureka, a clear fit. Yes, America loved Billy boy (except for the exception to any rule - Hillary). His charism was astounding and the breadth or his reach....well, I won't go there. So the answer to my question seemed to rest at the end of the 20th Century and the answer to my quest; how and when did Boss Day become officially a Hallmark Holiday.
Fast forward fifty plus years after the "age of aquarius", past the time when the fathers of the modern movement coined the phrase "less is more" (which doesn't quite seem to apply each time I find less and less in my wallet at the supermarket's cash register), to the here and now when the nation's sentiments have suddenly shifted from "greed is good" to "the golden rule" is not that "gold rules" in the wake of the global economic tsunami. Given all the changes in sentiment, is it an appropriate climate to dress the occassion of an ordinary day in loving sentiments for those above? I guess being a kiss ass has it's merits.
As such, in honor of our political head of state, our reverent leader, who is the top dog in our nation, a few sentiments brought on by "change" comes to mind;
Dear Boss,
Roses are red,
you're a doc, I'm blue.
I heard a rumor,
My job is through.
From, your office staff
The budget is red, Gunthier is blue. Why shoud he care? They'll tax you-know-who.
Depression detered, the bubble deflated. Raise taxes you say, recession elated.
Here's one designed to butter up your boss;
Dear Boss,
Roses are red,
but I'm feeilng blue.
Today is Friday,
Now what do I do?
I'm sure there's plenty cards to select from, but at $4.00/card I guess I'll just send myself a quick email.
