I've got a new BF (since the summer, just after July 4th in case you really want to know) who's absolutely FABULOUS ("He's a doctor. What a good daughter" my aging mom likes to tell her friends). BUT he lives in Fla. which is really not a problem (hey, LA is an additional 3 hours on a red-eye). So I visit quite frequently since the life of an underemployed writer provides tremendous freedoms. He comes to the Big Apple one long weekend each month. Needless to say, this gives me plenty more material to write about and a new book to work on (Yes, I have several- www.Hip-Hop-Hippo.com for kids, don't forget the hyphens, and couple more for adults. Don't stick your nose up, JZ, yes JZ as in Beyonce's hubby, is thinking one over).
Anyway, today is my dad's b-day so in honor of this and his Brooklyn roots, here's a bonus story;

"Hi Mom
Yes that was for real. They rip people off all the time in that shop. The prices are made up as they go along (it's well known). I couldn't tell you the real cost of coffee cause everyday it's a new price give or take about 15 cents. It also varies with the server. Go figure.
But $7 for an item they don't even carry - that was really something.
The rest of it goes like this: "Start over I want my money back." She hands me my $12.75 and then rings $3.75, $2.75, $1.50 and 10 cents (extra for decaf she tells me). I ask why one bagel is $3.75 when the quarter pound price on the sign says $2.75 (after all they don't put 1/4 lb. of cream cheese on the bagels). She says the signs are wrong the prices went up. The total is $8.10. I hand her a $10 and get back 75 cents change (shy $1.15). Then after I bring inside the food, I bite into a bagel - the cream cheese was spoiled.
There's no place like home, Sheryl"
