"Today is the future of yesterday" Announced the Army’s top spokesman, Secretary of the Army And former box office star Jack Black proudly addressing Members of the 101st Airborne Divisions "Wings of the Eagle" Battalion. "This thing totally rocks!" Sec Black is quoted as saying as he, project managers, and members of the press lifted off for a short orientation flight. The new UH-60X will replace an aging fleet of UH-60M helicopters that were fielded in 2008 to replace the then aging fleet of UH-60 A/L.
The UH-60 Blackhawk is a medium lift helicopter primarily used for cargo and troop transport By the U.S Army and is one of the most recognized military helicopters in the world. The new UH-60X will integrate Full "fly by wire" technology as well as voice recognition software for integrated systems. It will also be equipped with a touch screen Glass cockpit designed by the Apple computer company based on the generation XI Iphone. "This is the first joint venture between Apple computers and sicorski helicopter and i'm sure it wont be the last, this is a milestone for both companies" said Apple CEO Steve Jobs as he buckled in along side Sec Black for his orientation flight.
Other features of the new Blackhawk include an upgraded autopilot system, improved seating, as well as upgraded engines and gearboxes. There have been some benefits for those who fly the new UH-60X. Apple added some of there own touches to the Aircraft As well. The intergraded Touch screen Glass cockpit includes features for visual voicemail, sms messaging, Google earth, 6G broadband internet access supported by safari. As well as the controversial full access to iTunes online store.(Still no word yet if the controversial iTunes feature was a contributing factor in last months deadly crash that killed 3 crew members on a training flight.) "These where important additions" Jobs said to reporters of the intergraded apple features. "We needed to be sure that we keep troops connected to the rest of the world and remind them that they are using a quality Apple system."
Despite overwhelming excitement about the new features in the Army aviation community, some Pilots are a little skeptical of the new upgrades, "It’s a waste of money" said Chief Warrant officer 5 and Head Unit Instructor pilot Scott Stanley, 48 said of the new 40 million dollar helicopter. "I just don’t see the necessity of it all it’s a cool toy but that’s it. Allot of these features would not be useful in a tactical combat environment" That feeling was echoed by many of the senior pilots of the unit who early on in there careers saw conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. "The helicopter doesn’t even look tactical anymore, I cant believe they put a chrome plated Apple logo on the nose, it just doesn’t make sense" says Chief warrant officer 4 Bob Olton, 44 Referring to the army’s decision to place company logo's and advertisements on the new helicopters to help offset some of the cost of the new Aircraft. ......................................................
