Early yesterday mornin in a remote area of the Siberian Peninsula the very last drop of oil was pumped from the ground. Yvegeny Kirkutsk stated through an interpreter that it was a very emotional moment for everyone involved as it signified the end of many things.....including their jobs. The drop was saved and put in a mason jar and discussions are in place as to where this last drop should go and to whom it belongs to.
The Russian Government feels that it should it be theirs as it was pumped from their soil. However a growing amount of people worldwide feel that the drop belongs in a museum, and that it belongs to the world. Yet others still think it should be used like any other drop would be. The debate is sure to continue. U.S. President Walker Bush said in a statement through white house press secretary James Bob Thompson that the drop should belong to America, because oil is American and he said he is willing to fight for it.
What seems to be lost in all this comotion over what to do with the actual last drop of oil, is what else it signifies. After all, most economies worldwide depend on oil still. Only a few countries took steps in the earlier parts of the 21st century to reduce their dependency on oil and thus are poised to have extreme economic success in the post oil era. Others however are basically doomed. Already The United States has seen a massive voluntary exodus to foreign nations better poised to deal with the stress of the upcoming months. Some cities in the western part of the country are already turning into Ghost towns and there are vehicles piling up abandoned all over the roads and highways west of the rockies. Small communities of peoples have gathered in areas and are living off the land. The whole area resembles a post war Iraq, with random scattered settlements around small bodies of water.
It is assumed that larger cities worldwide will still have access to oil for about 2 years. How they cope with the shortages could very well decide the fate of their futures. As for the last drop of oil, where it ends up is as unknown as the futures of the worlds powers. For some it signifies the end of an era, for others it's just the end of their careers, for the world it is a question mark.
